...I’m here now, blegging for your assistance. On June 13th I’m riding the Tour de Cure, a charity bike ride to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association. I know, these charities have huge overhead, but diabetes doesn’t have a lot of directly-donatable charities, and more people are getting this - especially children. Did you know they no longer call Type 2 “adult-onset diabetes?” Because the largest growing segment that gets it? Kids. Kids are getting a disease that used to afflict mainly the elderly, then fat middle-aged people, and now, thanks to a combination of flat-out evil behavior from food companies and utter laziness coupled with a lack of effort on the parts of parents everywhere…kids are getting “adult onset” diabetes as early as 8 or 9 years old. Just imagine what that means, what you have to feed a child in order to create a disease state that shouldn’t happen to them for another 40 years.

Part of the effort to combat this trend is education (both parents and children), and that costs money, and that is where the American Diabetes Association can be useful. SO…go here: http://main.diabetes.org/goto/stark23x. Donate. Sponsor my (still fat but shrinking every day) ass to chug along the roads of North Haven, CT in support of helping not the fat middle-aged dude who eats nothing but King-Size Reese’s and KFC twice a day and can’t figure out why he’s 350 lbs. and his blood sugar is all over the road, but for the child of that parent who doesn’t know that what the kid is being given to eat is going to put them in the ground at an early age.

http://main.diabetes.org/goto/stark23x. Right now my class’s team is signed up for the 25K. I should tell you now, that is NOT a challenge for me. However, if I raise $250, I will ride it twice, even if no one else from my team joins me. 50K is a bit of a challenge, but here’s the kicker. $500 and I’ll ride it three times. 75K will literally chap my ass, and I do mean literally. So if you despise me, here’s your chance to make me suffer.

JimK: For those who have a thing called a “life” and may not keep up with the latest celebrity goings-on, Bret Michaels is gravely ill. He had acute appendicitis the other day, came through the surgery, but had to be rushed to the hospital due to a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage - bleeding at the base of the brain stem.

Some of you know…we have a personal connection to the man, Donna and her friends followed them on tour back in the day and made friends with the band, and of course I savaged the shit out of two years of that God-forsaken Rock of Love show. And all his douchiness aside, I’m still a Poison fan. If you cut me, I bleed, among other things, neon green. And so, I have compiled a list of 5 reasons why Bret has to make it:

5. Every group deserves a spokesperson - even douchebags

4. Spray-painted straw cowboy hats. That’s right. I said it. Spray-painted straw cowboy hats. With writing on them. Who the fuck else is gonna rock that look?

3. Paris Hilton and Lady GaGa can’t keep the Los Angeles hair extension industry alive by themselves!

2. VH1 won’t have anything to air anymore, they’ll just have to shut the doors. Especially since Flava Flav is about two weeks from a crack overdose.

1. And the number one reason why Bret Michaels has to survive this health scare: Those god-damned Ed Hardy shirts aren’t gonna sell themselves. That shit is an industry now, and the American economy just can’t take the hit. Besides, folks going to Wal-Mart gotta have something to wear besides Juicy Couture and Miley Cyrus shit.

By Rann

Reviewing the unofficial D&D 3.75 book.

Rann: And lo, the pantheon of Wizards of the Coast did declare that there would be a new edition, and it was said this would be good. And then lo, the Wizards did say that the new edition would be different. And many minds were fucking lost.

Let’s not beat around the bush: Pathfinder is a project sprung from butthurt. It was made by people that couldn’t stand the fact that 4e was a different beast, and so they liberally <strike>ripped off</strike> drew inspiration from third edition to create a new system that would be compatible with all your books. So great was their anger at the evil ol’ WotC that they just couldn’t resist liberally lifting pretty much everything about the magic items, combat rules, and so on in what might be the most extreme use of the OGL ever. The foreword is practically one long smirk aimed at 4e, and you can almost see, if you look closely between the lines, the tiny words written “You’ll all be sorry! We’ll show you!”

Now, having said that, Pathfinder isn’t a bad system. Not at all, in fact it has a number of compelling features and improvements over 3e, and an improved way to use all your old stuff is a pretty hefty bonus. And the artwork is exquisite, lush and vibrant and sexy, and just as dungeonpunk, if not more, than 4e wound up being. It makes some certain tweaks to the combat system that make it easier and more compelling to actually use certain combat maneuvers and tactics that in regular 3e would have more often meant a great deal of fiddling around with the rules in the player’s guide and thus were rarely attempted outside of Grapple.

Let’s just say that Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons: Fourth Edition speak to two very different sets of people that had previously played 3e. There’s overlap in these two sets, of course, but nominally the two products are geared for either one or the other.

4e is for the people who were playing 3e because they wanted to have awesome adventures in an Age of Adventure setting. It’s easy for anyone to play any class so long as they’re willing to learn the general rules of the game, and no one player’s experience playing a class is wildly different from anyone else’s. You just pick what you want to play and you go for it. It’s for people that just like RPGs for the fun they provide.

Pathfinder is for the people who were playing 3e because they knew the system, they knew how to work the system, and they liked the system. The classes have wildly divergent play styles, and thus the players will have very different play experiences and going from one class to another will require its own brand of learning and catching up. If anything, the divide between casters and melee characters is even larger, and your tolerance and ability for bookkeeping must be taken into account. It’s for people who set out to MASTER a system, the hardcore players. (Hardercore, anyway.)

See, the thing about 3e (and thus, by extension, Pathfinder) is that it’s crunchy. Always has been. Not as crunchy as, say, Champions thank god, but it’s still going to require you to have more pages to your character sheet than can easily fit in a clear plastic sleeve if you’re going to be playing anything more complicated than a straight melee character or low-level mix character (rogue or ranger). Casters like wizards and sorcerers are the worst about this, with a constant need to update your spell list, mark down what spells you’ve memorized, how many times you’ve memorized it, which have been spontaneously converted into something, what’s memorized at a different level, what’s a bonus domain spell and how that affects casting it, all that sort of stuff. Casters in Pathfinder are virtually identical to their 3e brethren… well, they pretty much have to be, or they wouldn’t really be able to hold up to their promise of “All the other books work without conversion.” The magic items and so on are so entrenched in how the magic system of 3e works that any attempt to refine the casters themselves would either require a conversion process or is simply impossible. So if you played a caster in 3e previously, you know exactly what to do, and if you avoided playing a caster because it felt too much like homework, then you’ll still want to avoid them.

If anything, the divide between the revamped (and revitalized) melee classes parallels the divide between 4e and Pathfinder, if not wider. If you mostly stuck to melee in 3e, you’re going to wind up sticking exclusively to melee in Pathfinder, and vice versa. The gap between the “types” of players you have in your group is larger. In some ways I could see this leading to trouble, with some snarking about “brutes” and “finger-wigglers”, but shouldn’t be too bad unless your group is made up of a bunch of dicks. (And if they are, what’s the matter with you? Get a new group!)

Mostly I want to talk about two character classes that have probably been revamped the most, and to the best effect. These are the Barbarian and the Rogue. Rather than a strange, semi-useful set of abilities, at certain levels they now get to choose Rage Powers and Rogue Talents from a long list, providing a wealth of customization options and a reason to keep on playing them.

The Rogue was already a decent class, but it suffered from turning into something kind of different later on in its progression. It starts out as a melee fighter with a few special abilities, then eventually wanders into being sort of a melee fighter and sort of a spellcaster and still not being very good at either. And as noted, casters are crunchy, so suddenly you go from just managing your fairly small array of feats and abilities to needing to do bookkeeping… not a LOT of bookkeeping, because the rogue spell list was pretty small, but then one winds up wondering “Why have it at all?” Beyond one or two spells, you could do almost anything in your spell list more easily, more effectively, and more often with skills, scrolls, wands and rods.

Now a Rogue stays a Rogue the whole way through instead of turning into a kind of wizard-y thing. You can still get various bits of magic via Rogue Talents, but these become spell-like abilities… something a lot easier to manage and keep track of. You just pick a couple of spells from the list when you take that Talent, and from then on you can cast it a few times a day as a spell-like ability. Easy stuff. There’s also a wealth of other Talents that you can take to get abilities that could previously only be gotten through giving up one of your precious few feats to get them. Instead of being just a way to rack up skill points for a prestige class and grab some sneak attack, now a rogue is completely worth it to play all the way through because it’s only going to get better and more personalized as it goes.

Barbarians are even more drastic than that. In my experience, no one actually played a Barbarian. Barbarian was what you took a level of to get the extra speed before heading into Fighter. You might stick around a few more levels to actually get one or two more of the other special abilities, like more raging and trap sense, but who goes to twenty with a Barbarian? Hell, who goes to TEN? The proof’s in just how few Barbarian-themed Prestige Classes there were… it was rare anyone wanted to stick with Barbarian long enough to get the prerequisites together. You started with a level of Barbarian, you went to Fighter, and eventually you went to something else because your Fighter looked like a limp-dick next to the mage who’s causing stuff’s internal organs to turn into plasma and explode every round by the time you’re in the -teen levels. But now Rage Powers and more special abilities make the Barbarian an attractive prospect all the way up to twenty, with almost as many customization options, if not more, than the old Fighter had with bonus feats. The Barbarian now has a purpose… the straightforward damage-dealer next to the Fighter’s more customizable damage/control/maneuvering possibilities.

I really think all of the classes could have been revamped this way, making them still 3e-ish but more accessible, more desirable. Sadly this didn’t happen, due to Pathfinder’s “no conversion, just compatibility” declaration and just how reliant on the magic system working juuuust so was to way too many feats, magic items, and prestige classes. It’s some wasted potential, and that’s sad. But the other revamps make it worth it anyway, and Pathfinder is definitely an upgrade from 3e for them alone. And crunchy is a little better sometimes… it’s possible for 4e to be a little too streamlined, even though I think overall it’s the better system. If you’re looking for something a little more simulationist and familiar, and wanting to crack open some of the stuff in those old 3e books you thought you were going to retire, Pathfinder is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

EDIT: Durrr, my bad. Rogues don’t get spellcasting, rangers do. I was operating on murky memories of the rogue in the last 3e game I played, who cross-classed like it was going out of style. (Which, I guess, it kinda was.)

Opening comment - I *HATE* that we have a Final 6 and not a Final 4. I know why the show had to do it, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. We never got an all-girls or all-boys dance, and the audience only got to vote 3 times. I think this plus the MLB conflicts at the beginning of the season make the case that So You Think You Can Dance should stay a summer only show. The fall season was overly rushed and I just don’t think it worked. It seems Nigel agrees with me, so hopefully this will be the last SYTYCD in the fall.

Onto the show… which strangely was only an hour. WTF? The performance finale - the most important night of dancing on this show - is half the regular length? Once again… I hate this show in the fall. We did get everyone dancing with everyone else save for the all-girls and all-boys numbers, so there was that. Still… strange.

Kathryn and Ryan started us off with a sexy samba. I still don’t feel a connection between these two but this number was SMOKING. Ryan was totally in his element and Kathryn burst into life. Kathryn has grown tremendously during this competition - I do hope she does well. Wonderful job by both

Ellenore and Jakob were up next with a Tyce Broadway number that was hot and supremely danced by both. Jakob is predicted by pretty much everyone to run away with the victory this season and it’s dancing like this that makes me see why. However, I still maintain that this is America’s FAVORITE Dancer, and Jakob, while amazing, isn’t mine. Ellenore is easily my favorite woman on the show so I hope she places high.

Ashleigh and Russell melted the stage with a gorgeous and heart-wrenching lyrical jazz number by Sonya. First of all, Sonya’s choreography has grown by leaps and bounds this season - I’m loving most everything she does. Secondly, Ashleigh has done a 180 in my head. I started this season hating her with a passion, and now I’ve grown to love her and her work. Thirdly, OMG Russell is SO the man! His growth has been exponential, far more than I’ve ever seen in anyone ever on this show. His versatility is just astounding and his personality infectious, which is why he’s my choice to win. This routine was off-the-charts good.

Ellenore and Ryan were up next with a bizarre Gary Stuart jazz piece that left me at odds with myself. On one hand, I disliked the choreography, but one the other, the two danced the HELL out of a particularly odd and challenging piece. If there’s fault here it wasn’t with the dancers.

Ashleigh and Jakob were back together with a Jean-Marc foxtrot which just sizzled. Ashleigh was off the hook all night dancing her heart out. The judges kept saying it was Kathryn’s night but I disagree - I think it was Ashleigh’s night to shine. She really blossomed this season and I can only wish her well in all things - she really won my heart.

Ellenore and Russell followed up with a Jason Gilkenson paso double that was just outstanding. Russell has come so far so fast it’s just breathtaking to watch him pull off something as technical as this so well. I loved this - it was a true triumph for Russell.

Kathryn and Jakob were up next with a technically gorgeous contemporary number that got a standing ovation from the fans and judges. I thought it was a magnificent piece but I don’t know that it was standing O good. It did showcase the very best in both dancers but I have to say I’m getting tired of watching Jakob do the exact same moves in every dance he does. Now, that’s not his fault, that’s all choreography, but it does cool me to him just a bit. This really was an amazing number across the board.

Finally the Di Lello’s were reunited when Ashleigh and Ryan danced a Travis Wall contemporary number and tore the house down. This was a magical, emotional piece and these two were sheer perfection. This was my Awesome Dance of the Week (closely followed by Ashleigh and Russell’s Sonya piece) without question. The chemistry and technical precision were off the charts and it was just amazing to watch the love between these two. This was the most beautiful number of the season and it was a privilege to watch.

Kathryn and Russell ended the night with a smokin’ hot Nappy Tabs hip hop routine that displayed Russell in all his glory. Phenomenal work by both dancers made this one of the most fun and exciting dances of the night, and Russell just killed it out there. Great ending to a great night.

So who’s going to win? The Net says Jakob with an outside chance of Kathryn. Every dancer left has a HUGE fanbase so I’m not willing to put money on anyone. I know I hope that Russell wins it all - not only does he need it most but he’s worked harder than everyone and come farther faster than anyone else. I know I voted nearly a hundred times for Russell and I’m always quite sure that people all over the country will be doing the same for their favorite. This is going to be a shooting match and I really feel it’s anyone’s game. Can’t wait to see who wins!

That’s all from me… thoughts?

By Rann

It came from my DVR backlog!

Rann: I have a tendency to let episodes of Bones build up in my DVR, at least two or three deep. It’s one of my favorite series, and yet it requires a certain… mood, a certain time to sit down and properly enjoy it. I guess for me it’s just one of those series where I can’t sit down and watch it just any old time, despite how much I like it.

If you’re not familiar with Bones, here’s a quick crash course. Doctor Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute, heading up their in-house forensics lab. (They solve crimes sent to them by various organizations, but also do historical reconstructions, investigations, and authentications.) She’s partnered with FBI special agent Seeley Booth, to solve strange crimes that occur on federal land or otherwise grant the FBI jurisdiction. (Which, this being a TV show, is pretty much whatever crime they feel like writing. Some episodes don’t even really bother to explain why Booth has the case.) It’s a procedural show that works on the strength of its characters as much as anything, standing in contrast to most other shows of the type where the most we see of the characters’ personal lives are occasional tiny clips of their primary hobbies, their inter-office quipping, and the low-level sexual tension going on.

It’s also a show that distinguishes itself because the episodes never really fall below the level of “mediocre”. Which doesn’t sound like a big accomplishment, but think of any other show you like. Isn’t there just that one episode that just absolutely sucks so bad you won’t even watch it if it comes on? Maybe more than one? Maybe that one whole season? While some episodes/seasons of Bones have individual aspects that make you want to thunk your head against the wall, I can’t think of any episode where the whole thing was just bad. Knowing that the worst you’re likely to get out of a series is an episode that’s rather “meh” is a pretty good deal, these days.

Of course, it can be a little confusing when you run across episodes that display some of the series’ greatest strengths and some of its greatest weaknesses back to back.

Take the episode of a few weeks back, “The Foot in the Foreclosure”. This episode demonstrates most of the series’ greatest strengths, those being the interactions between the characters, as well as the characters’ integrity and heart. In a day and age where the “edgy, hip” thing to do is to have an entire cast composed of some of the most unsympathetic assholes ever whipped up for fiction, Bones occasionally takes some time to remind us that these are good people with good motivations for what they do who produce good results because they work hard for it. This episode’s crime is in a house that was for sale, where the victim was incinerated in bed. Like most procedural shows, this ties in a little bit to an odd subculture (“feeding” fetishism in this case). But the real focus of the episode is that Booth’s grandfather Hank has come to stay with him for awhile.

Booth was raised by his grandfather for most of his life, and it’s clear that if his grandfather comes to live with him permanently, that will now be reversed. Much of the episode deals with Booth explaining his values and dealing with such a responsibility. Unlike in other cases, no one ever really questions this particular “old-fashioned” value of Booth’s… they caution him what a lot of work it will be, but even Sweets (the psychiatrist member of the team) doesn’t try to headshrink him over it. Probably because Brennan and Sweets, both of the people most likely to pick apart Booth’s motives for anything, know just how much Booth’s grandfather means to him.

It’s not a stellar episode… it has some rather weak points, and the balance between the A plot and B plot feels off… but it’s a good episode. The characters are behaving like they should at this point of being familiar with each other and having gotten to know one another, which is a bonus, as one of the series’ flaws is that while the characters often take five steps forward every season, they seem to take between four and six steps back during the season break.

This stands in stark contrast with the episode that followed it the next week, “The Gamer in the Grease”, aka “The Hour-Long Bones-themed Commercial for Avatar”. Seriously, the entire B-plot revolves around how awesome Avatar is going to be and that people are lining up days in advance and their whole lives are revolving around Avatar oh don’t you want to see Avatar sure you want to see Avatar oh for the love of god please see Avatar don’t you understand how much this fucking anti-human screed COST us?!

The A-plot isn’t a lot better, revolving around a murdered “gamer” who supposedly played a perfect game… of some almost-thirty-year-old fusion of Pong and Donkey Kong. Seriously. The episode at least tries to salve this a little by saying that it’s a “retro” hit and has been rereleased as a virtual game on modern consoles, but it still comes off as having a bit of that “Pac-Man Fever” feel to it. The rivalry over who holds the high score is a reference to a real-life thing, including the drama over possibly doctored videos, a ref who’s clearly on a particular gamer’s side, and so on… I read the story once, years before the episode, but can’t recall details and the place where I read about it seems to have purged that tidbit. But it isn’t so much “ripped from the headlines” as “tugged from the archives”, we’ll say that.

The episode is weak not just for its stumbling A-plot or for its purely promotional B-plot (the show seems to fall victim to being forced to write in advertising for other Fox properties a lot), but because the character interaction is weak and shallow at best. It was like it was written by someone who had watched the show and was trying to emulate it without understanding it, or even trying to understand it. The lessons Sweets learns after talking with Hodgins towards the end comes off as less “talking things out with friends and understanding yourself better” and more “hastily wedged-in after school special lesson”.

Spoiler alert! I need to spoiler the end of the episode to really fully get why this episode bugged me.

See, turns out the perfect game was actually played by this Autistic kid who really does nothing but play this game all the time. When the kid’s father learned about this guy “stealing credit” from his son, he beat the guy to death with a golf club. The guy sobs about how the gamer “stole the only thing my son HAS!” and Bones and Booth sit there and look sympathetic. Then, when they’re talking afterward, Booth makes the requisite comments about how he understands, because when you’re a father and your kid is heartbroken, it can drive you to do things. Bones points out, ridiculously half-heartedly for her, that the kid was autistic and his heart wasn’t broken. Booth brushes it off with “So the father loved him twice as much!” This then devolves into some limping comparison of the different ways they think to ancient cultures’ base 60 style of math.

This scene is the one that feels the most false, and again gives that feel of emulating an episode of the show rather than being an episode of the show. I dunno if they brought someone new in to write this because the regular writers balked at turning half of their running time into a commercial for James Cameron’s big blue piece of cat shit, or if the regular writers just didn’t give a crap because, again, they were being forced to write a piece of the media campaign to sell us on Avaturd, but it just comes off as if the script said “Booth says something homespun and simplistic about the power of fatherhood. Bones yammers something sciencey about not agreeing with him but respecting his viewpoints.”

If this had been an actual episode instead of a thin veneer of one over an Assatar promo, Sweets or Brennan, or even Booth himself, would have pointed out that the father didn’t do it for his son at all… he did it for himself. After all, his son was never going to be the high school football MVP, or the track star, or any of that, but by god he played a perfect game on an arcade cabinet and that would have been something to go on TV or to the water cooler at work and brag about. His son didn’t care about getting credit, he didn’t care about the video… as his father himself opines, he doesn’t even recognize his parents, let alone that anything’s been “stolen” from him. His father didn’t kill the guy for taking something from his son, he killed the guy for stealing his only chance, after being denied so long, to have some bragging rights.

Booth shouldn’t have been sympathizing with the guy, he should have thrown his bullshit in his face and been furious with him for using his son as a shield for his own hubris and vanity that resulted in murder. But then, I guess too much emotional intensity might have distracted people from just how kewl Avatar is going to be, and we couldn’t have THAT.

But anyway, I suppose it says something about the series that this episode is about the closest I’ve ever seen the series come to having just a flat-out terrible one. And even it’s not that bad. I probably wouldn’t watch it in reruns, but I wouldn’t feel compelled to change the channel in disgust. Even the shittiest episode Bones has probably put out to date can’t inspire a ragequit. That’s saying something in a day and age where any given episode of, say, Stargate Universe could inspire you to burn it to disk just for the sake of throwing it in the toilet and pissing on it like it’s pissing all over the franchise.

DonnaK: Here’s the deal. I have a MASSIVE flu from hell and barely have the energy to sit here and type, so this is going to be really short and sweet. The Top 8 really went all out tonight - everyone performed better than they have all season. This is honestly a crap shoot at this point - the skill levels are so close that it’s not longer about talent. This is purely a “who do you like better” contest now, so with that in mind here are my quick thoughts on the show

It was a week for injuries - Ellenore hurt her rotator cuff but was able to dance, but Ashleigh popped her shoulder out of the socket and was medically barred from dancing. She’s still in the competition so we have to vote for her from her past work alone. This left poor Russell without a partner for the second time - that poor man!

Kathryn and Ryan were fantastic in both their disco and their cha cha, although I got a distinct - and strong - vibe from Kathryn that she dislikes Ryan. She actively moved his hands off of her at least twice during the ciritiques and I think it’s clear she couldn’t stand him. It’s a credit to her that she made the dances work so well. Ryan is the one one of the whole group who’s dancing is slightly sub-par - he’ll definitely be the guy to go tonight.

Mollee and Jakob were lovely in their Viennese waltz although it was clear Mollee was trying desperately to keep up with Jakob. The pair worked together better in their Joey Dowling Broadway number which was stunning. Mollee’s fighting hard but I don’t know if she has the fan base to hold her spot.

Ellenore and Legacy had not just the Awesome Dance of the Week with a simply mind-blowing Travis Wall contemporary number… it was the dance of the season. It was so far beyond good it defies words, really. Their Nappy Tabs hip hop wasn’t as strong, but that was almost entirely Nappy Tabs fault and not theirs. It makes me worry for Legacy a bit - he might be the one in the bottom two with Ryan.

Russell dances with his choreographers due to Ashleigh’s injury, but he was bang on the money for both his Shane Sparks hip hop (DAMN he can hit hard!) and his Bollywood number. He impressed the hell out of both me and the judges and I feel very sure he’ll make it into the Top 6 with those performance and his huge fan base.

As far as solos go, the only dreadful one was Ryan. He made a completely fake “crying” plea for everyone to vote for Ashleigh… I say fake because one does not sob and have one’s voice break without one’s eyes getting red, moist and tearful… unless you’re Ryan Di Lello of course. Yeah, fake. Boot this guy already, k? Russell and Legacy both had amazing solos with props and everything - those boys went ALL out! Everyone else was wonderful - again, the skill level is really even save for Ryan.

Ryan’s definitely bottom two and I think Legacy will join him, but Ryan is definitely the one going home. The girls are harder - I think Ashleigh will bottom two due to not performing but it could be anyone their with her. I hope it’s Mollee as she’s my least favorite but I don’t feel sure of Kathryn’s fan base. If I had a gun to my head and had to pick I would say that - due to popularity only - Kathryn might be out. But honestly I don’t know with the girls, just the guys.

Okay, that’s enough typing from me today. Next week is the final so it should be one HELL of a show. Thoughts?

DonnaK: Before I get down into the details of this week’s show, a comment or two, if you will….

There has been much talk from the show’s talent and producers that “season six is the best season ever”! In fact, that line has been the show’s mantra this season from the very first audition show. The question is… is it true? Many out there, including myself, are really beginning to feel is isn’t. I’ve long felt that the cast, the production and the choreography of this season are all weaker than they were last season. We’ve had very few truly memorable routines, few standout performers or performances, VERY few amazing solos, and the huge influx of new choreographers has, in my view, hurt more than helped. I think season five was stronger in every possible way and I just wish that the judges would simply stop trumpeting that season six is the end-all and be-all of SYTYCD. It isn’t, and just repeating yourself won’t make it so. Now, I’m not trying to knock this season’s talent, I’m really not. They are all talented, wonderful dancers. But I just haven’t seen many awesome standouts this season like I did with Melissa, Ade, Brandon, Kayla, Evan, Janette, and, yes, even Max. I think season six has a very even playing field which will make it exciting, but best? No, I think not.

Having said all that, time to stop yapping and get on to the show. We’ve hit the Top 10 so all the couples were broken up and the girls chose both their partners and their dances out of a hat. And now that the vote has gone to America, in addition to dancing with their partners twice, each dancer must perform a solo. That’s a lot of dancing, time to get to it.

Our first new couple, Noelle and Ryan, started off the night with a Nappy Tabs hip hop number that had a lot of sizzle. I thought the performances by both Ryan and Noelle were spot on, especially Noelle who oozed sex for this dance. The choreography seemed to be a bit off - more posing and less dancing - but the pair did everything asked of them and more. For their second number the pair danced a smooth waltz by JT and Tomas. This was a beautifully choreographed number danced perfectly… which for some reason I simply could not connect to at all. I felt a wall of distance between the two dancers and between the dancers and me the observer. I put the blame for this on Ryan, who seemed very detached and not nearly as connected to Noelle as he was in their first number. I was only iffy about this second dance, but overall a good showing, at least from Noelle.

Ashleigh and Legacy, a pairing I NEVER thought would work, had a strong showing with a completely bizarre (and in my opinion not right for this show) contemporary number by Gary Stuart. I couldn’t tell what the hell was going on in this dance. It was a constant show of leaping, athleticism, and a lot of hip hop that made no sense to me. I thought Legacy and Ashleigh danced the hell out of it, but I simply hated the choreography. I really wish the producers would stop bringing these totally strange and foreign routines and choreographers to the show, especially when it’s clinch time in the Top 10. It isn’t fair to the dancers or we the untrained audience. The judges RAVED for this number which I hope helps the two. Ashleigh and Legacy’s second dance was a Dave Scott hip hop number where Legacy got to play a vampire and Ashleigh his victim. I *LOVED* this number and thought it one of the best of the night… but the judges shat all over it. In fairness their criticism was entirely about the choreography and not the dancing, which just reinforces my earlier point. I think the judges are nuts and I loved this piece, but it might leave Ashleigh and Legacy in a bit of trouble.

Kathryn and Nathan were up next with a Spencer Liff Broadway number. These two were simply stunning in this, looking and dancing as if they had been lifted out of the 40’s. Beautiful in every way, this was the boost Nathan so badly needed. And then… the two got hit with a Tony Meredith rumba. Now, once again, I loved this. I thought the two were sexy and wild and everything good in this piece. However, the judges slammed both the choreography and Nathan in particular for not living up to rumba standards. Now I’m actually getting pissed - why are the dancers getting bad reviews when *their* work is solid and it’s the choreography that the judges don’t like? Knocking the dancers down for doing the best the can with a bad number doesn’t help the audience judge fairly - they hear the negativity and it sours them on the dancers, not the routine. Nathan’s sour face isn’t going to win him any votes either, so I’m looking to see Nathan in the bottom two.

Ellenore and Jakob, the REAL dream team, were paired up next and started the night with a dreaded quick step by Tony Meredith. And, for the first time in SYTYCD history, I loved the quick step! These two nailed this dance as much as it can be nailed by non-ballroom dancers. The judges were full of praise and I was very impressed by this showing. The two ended the night with a smashing contemporary number by Sonya. Now, everyone knows I’m not a Sonya fan, but her last few routines have been off the charts good, and this was no exception. Add the two best dancers on the show into the mix and you’ve got magic. This got and deserved a standing ovation from everyone and absolutely earned the Awesome Dance of the Week Award from me. These two will go all the way to the finals, no question.

Mollee and Russell were the last couple of the night. Their first dance, a Mandy Moore lyrical jazz number, was beautiful, mature and romantic. I couldn’t believe this was the same Mollee I’d been watching for weeks - she really came alive with Russell. Russell is just a marvel - I have no idea how he can do what he does with no formal training. A wonderful piece all around. The closed the night with a spectacular Anya and Pascha jive number that brought the house down. Again, Russell seems to defy all logic with his skill, and Mollee was more alive than I’ve even seen her. A great showing for both of them.

The best solos of the night easily went to Russell for the guys and Ellenore for the girls. Legacy’s solo was also out of this world as was Kathryn’s. Ryan’s solo was nothing short of a train wreck. It was god-awful in every way and I think cemented his place in the bottom two. Both Mollee and Noelle’s solos were just average and I disliked Ashleigh’s as well.

Factoring in past fan reactions and this week’s work (particularly the solos) I think it will be Nathan and Ryan in the bottom two for the guys and Noelle and Mollee for the girls. It’s going to be close but I’m thinking Ryan’s days are up in this competition. I heard some scattered boos during his introduction and that solo was enough to seal the deal. The fans have been off of Nathan for weeks now, though, so it could easily be him as well. The girls are much closer and I don’t discount the possibility that Ashleigh might hit the bottom two as well. However, I think that past rancor against Mollee will finally boil over and she’ll be off the show no matter how well she fared last night. Ashleigh’s my dark horse pick, but if I’m putting money on it I’m betting on Mollee and Ryan to go home.

Okay, enough from me. Thoughts?

By DonnaK

A fantastic night for So You Think You Can Dance.

DonnaK: Finally, a performance show worthy of this season! This is perhaps the first time all season where I’ve felt that the hype the this is the best cast the show has ever had might be justified. The routines were choreographed wonderfully and all the dancers brought their A games. It’s going to be a tough cut but I think (mostly) the right people will wind up in the Top 10.

Every couple danced twice last night and it’s the last night these couples will remain together - once we hit the Top 10 the couples get split up. Ellenore and Ryan started the night off with a wonderfully respectable Lindy Hop choreographed by Carla Heiney which was crisp, technically sound and - most importantly - happy and energetic. I really loved their performance here, but they topped themselves later that night with a stupendous Broadway number by Spencer Liff. Ellenore has a magical ability to inhabit characters, and both hers and Ryan’s technique has gotten crisper and stronger. These two are a definite lock for the Top 10 and it’s a well deserved lock at that.

Kathyrn and Legacy blew the doors off the place with an outstanding Sonya jazz number that was just amazing. Sonya left a lot of room for Legacy to bring out his B-boy background and the piece as a whole was stunning. And then… the pair stumbled with an awkward and messy Viennese waltz. I think we finally found something Legacy can’t do, because no matter how hard he fought he just couldn’t get the movements down. The routine was really a hot mess but I feel confident that the strength of these two throughout the season will save them even if they wind up in the bottom three.

Karen and Victor danced a smoldering tango choreographed by Tony Meredith next that just SIZZLED. It was quite breathtaking and extraordinarily well performed by both, but especially Karen. Unfortunately they weren’t as lucky with their second number - a Laurieann Gibson hip hop routine. The two were out of sync, missed steps, barely hitting and just plain lost. I feel certain these two will be in the bottom three tomorrow - that tango can’t save them from all the mistakes the two have been making this season.

Mollee and Nathan were up next with a Jamal Sims hip hop number. This didn’t work for me at all - I thought Mollee couldn’t keep up with the number and just couldn’t get down and dirty enough. I seriously don’t understand why she’s still here, but I doubt she will be for much longer. The pair danced a Tyce Diorio can-can next - a first for the show - and did a respectable but not amazing job. I think the immaturity of these two is really showing more and more and I feel quite sure that they will wind up in the bottom three again tonight.

Noelle and Russell had a rocky start with a Tony Meredith samba. Russell’s lack of training showed clearly as the two fumbled their way through the number. I give Russell an A for effort and for how much he’s grown this season but, just like Legacy and the waltz, it didn’t gel. However, their second routine, a contemporary number by Tyce Diorio, simply blew my mind. I couldn’t believe how amazing and fluid this piece was and how spectacularly Russell danced it. The choreography was amazing, the dancing amazing, and this was hands down the Awesome Dance of the Week. Honestly I thought this was the best dance of the season so far, that’s how great it was.

Ashleigh and Jakob danced last in the rotation starting with a beautiful lyrical jazz number by Sonya. My dislike of Sonya’s work is well known here, but I have to say that both her routines last night were spectacular. I have to say it… Ashleigh has come a LONG way. She’s converted me - I’m a fan of her dancing now and honestly look forward to seeing her perform. She and Jakob were both wonderful in this and it was easily one of the best routines of the night. They then cemented a place in the Top 10 with a Jean-Marc Genereux cha cha that let Ashleigh sizzle. Seriously… that was hot. Both dancers were superb but it was Ashleigh who stole the show with that cha cha. These two are sailing into the Top 10 for sure.

This leaves Karen and Victor and Mollee and Nathan as our first bottom three couples. Both of the Di Lello couples I think are quite safe, so it just comes down to whether it will be Kathryn and Legacy or Noelle and Russell that joins them in the bottom. Both couple had one extraordinary dance and one bad one. Both are HUGE favorites, both with the judges and with the fans. Honestly it could go either way, but I think that it will be Legacy and Kathryn who fall, simply because their weak dance was the last one by them we saw. I don’t think it matters, however, because Kathryn, Legacy, Russell and Noelle will all be saved by the judges. In the end, I think Karen and Victor will get the axe - they just aren’t up to par with everyone else. I doubt the judges will have the courage to axe Mollee or Nathan even though I feel they deserve it, but I think America won’t take them for very long anyway.

So… that’s my take. Any other opinions in the house?

DonnaK: Compared to the hot mess that was last week’s performance show, So You Think You Can Dance was in fine form this week. I think it’s becoming clearer and clearer who should be in the Top 10 and who shouldn’t be. Of course, that doesn’t mean the votes will go the way of the talent - this *is* America’s FAVORITE dancer, but here’s to hoping that the best people make it through.

We started the night with a classic Nappy Tabs hip hop routine by Ashleigh and Jacob. Has anyone else noticed that these two have always been either the first or second couple to dance on every show? Strange, that. I hate to say it but Ashleigh is growing on me. She hit hard and gave a very respectable performance - I may have to change my mind about her. Jacob was fantastic as usual and the pair got high marks all around.

Karen and Kevin were up next with a Spencer Liff Broadway routine. From the beginning I could smell “bottom three” on them once again. This number didn’t do much for me or the judges. They danced it fairly, but there was no spark or energy. I think Kevin’s time with us may be over, perhaps Karen as well.

Noelle and Russell danced next with their second fox trot of the season. VERY odd luck-of-the-draw there, but Russell proved himself more than capable as he has clearly grown leaps and bounds from the first show. He and Noelle were dazzling and Russell is definitely shaping up to be one of the front runners with both the judges and the audience.

Channing and Victor were next with a hot mess of a jazz piece by Tyce Diorio. I’m sorry, Tyce… but WTF were you smoking when you choreographed this? It was right out of an acid trip - Channing and Victor had to be two blackbirds with this bizarre, nonsensical musical accompaniment. Channing and Victor gave it their all, but the weirdness of the piece will bottom three them for sure. Add in to this the fact that neither of these two are growing at the rate that others in the competition are and I think their days are numbered.

Kathryn and Legacy danced a Tony Meredith paso double next and simply wowed the hell out of me. I was on the fence about Legacy at the beginning of the season. I didn’t think he had the chops or the stamina to make it beyond week two. Boy am I eating my words! Legacy is growing by leaps and bounds faster than anyone in SYTYCD history. There really doesn’t seem to be a limit to what he is capable of learning or dancing… and this guy has no professional training! I am personally amazed by Legacy and I really hope he makes it to the Final Four. I love Kathryn as well and I think both of them will see the Top 10 easily.

Ellenore and Ryan dominated the show next with a Travis Wall contemporary number and the first truly awesome dance of the season. I’m with Adam Shankman on this - this was the first moment this season where I just sat back and said “WOW”. Ellenore and Ryan are easily Top Ten bound and the winners this week of the Awesome Dance of the Week Award. A truly outstanding performance across the board from these two.

Nathan and Mollee closed the show with an average pop jazz number by Laurieann Gibson. I’m sorry, but Mollee is simply not good enough to be here. She doesn’t possess the skill or maturity for this competition and she’s only here because Nathan apparently makes the teenage girls gooey in their panties. For me this was the third bottom three performance of the night, but we’ll just have to see whose fans are stronger on the phones.

By my math Karen and Kevin as well as Channing and Victor have a lock on two of the bottom three spots. I think the strength of Ashleigh and Jacob and Ellenore and Ryan’s routine will catapult them into safety. That means the last spot in the bottom three with go to either Mollee and Nathan or Noelle and Russell, and this will simply come down to whose fan base cranks out more votes. No matter who takes the third spot I think Karen and Kevin are the likely pair to go home as neither of them is showing the kind of growth we’re seeing in other couples.

So there’s my call… have a different opinion? Let’s hear it!

By DonnaK

A bad night for the #SYTYCD dancers….

DonnaK: Last week I had a lot to say about how I felt the choreography was off this season and not giving the dancers as much to work with. Well, this week the choreographers delivered… it was the dancers that failed, some quite miserably. For at least four of the eight couples it was somewhere between an off to a really bad night and it had nothing to do with the choreography. It was just bad dancing left and right last night… perhaps all the claims that this cast is superior to last season’s isn’t quite as accurate as everyone has been saying? With the early loss of Billy and Bianca - two of the biggest and brightest of the season - combined with the loss of Mia Michaels, I’m doubting this season will have the strength of last season. I’ve one more choreographer rant for the week, though… but I’ve save that for later.

Despite all the missteps there were some wonderful moments on the show and I think some clear stars are emerging. We started the evening with Karen and Kevin doing a Maria Torres hustle - a dance I admit I know nothing about. I’m going to have to trust the judges that this was technically strong although it didn’t particularly move me.

Jakob and Ashleigh followed that up with a Mandy Moore jazz number… which I hated. I want to cry for Jakob because I love him so but I just really cannot stand Ashleigh. I didn’t buy her performance at all because I didn’t feel she ever got into character. She’s just not capable of disappearing into a role because of her own need to be noticed, and because of that I felt the routine suffered badly. Why the judges continue to praise her is simply beyond me as I feel she one of the weakest links on this show. Let’s hope America starts agreeing with me.

Pauline and Peter danced the dreaded quickstep next and, from where I’m sitting, did surprisingly well. Let’s face it - no one is going to ever nail the quickstep so focusing on the technical mishaps isn’t entirely fair. What is fair is that the performance was light, fun, and full of chemistry and life, which easily glossed over and errors that were present. I liked this dance a lot.

Kathryn and Legacy were up next and danced a simply amazing Andy Blankenbuehler Broadway number. I admit it - I was happy that Legacy made it into the Top 20 but I didn’t think he’d last through the Top 18. All I can say is WOW! This kid is growing and learning at a rate that is simply astonishing. Legacy is quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I’m loving watching his growth. I love Kathryn as well and I thought she did exactly what she was supposed to do in this routine. I didn’t feel the judges criticisms were fair, especially about Kathryn. What’s with the judging this season?

Channing and Victor should have had an easy time with their Stacey Tookey contemporary routine, but it was just… meh. Technically it was impressive but I felt no passion and no chemistry in it at all. Huge disappointment for me and I immediately marked these two down for the bottom three.

Things continued to go downhill as Ellenore and Ryan made a gigantic mess of a Lil’ C hip hop routine. Honestly there is nothing good to say about this dance - these two were simply horrid. They’ll wind up in the bottom three for sure and they deserve it, as much as I like both of them. However… I have to note something here. Remember I said I had another choreographer beef? It’s with Lil’ C, who for the record I love as both a choreographer and a dancer. My problem? This entire dance was reused from a routine he did in season one. Don’t believe me? See for yourself. There is NO excuse for reusing an entire dance like that, and frankly Lil’ C should be ashamed of himself for doing it. I will say this though… watching Natalli and Vincent is season one slam this routine makes Elllenore and Ryan look even worse. *cringe*

As if things weren’t bad enough, they got worse when little Mollee and bubbly Nathan had to get dirty and sexy in a Gustavo Vargas samba. This was horrible, embarrassing and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mollee simply does not have the maturity (or the hips) to be on this show. I could barely stand watching it, that’s how awful it was. Mollee needs to go and she needs to go TODAY. Bottom three for sure unless the fans save them.

However, the show saved the best for last. Noelle and Russell ended the night with an Afrojazz numb er by Sean Cheesman that was simply outstanding and walked away with the Awesome Dance of the Week prize. Russell is easily my favorite guy on the show and he showed why again this week with his power, character, intensity and his partnering skills. Noelle really blossomed as well and the two of them are definitely going to grow as a couple. I’m delighted to give the Awesome Dance of the Week Award to these two.

By my count this leaves Channing, Ellenore and Mollee as our bottom three girls and Victor, Ryan, and Nathan as our bottom three guys. I don’t see the judges sending Mollee home as much as she deserves it, so my gut is telling me Channing is out. I’m sure the judges won’t touch Ryan, but both Victor and Nathan have weakness. I would cut Nathan and I hope the judges agree.

So what did you think? Guesses, comments, thoughts? Let’s hear it!

DonnaK: First of all… yes I know this post is late again. I have a hundred reasons for it, none of which anyone cares about I’m sure, but I am sorry nonetheless. I’ll try not to get behind again.

Second of all… So You Think You Can Dance is lucky that I stopped fuming long enough to even write this post this week. I am SO angry and infuriated with the judges at their elimination choices this week that I think I want to stab someone. To make it very clear how pissed off I am at the judge’s decision this week, let me just say that if I was not seriously rooting for one other contestant I might well have stopped watching in protest of this horrible decision. And this is coming from the one who still can’t turn off Heroes no matter how god awful it gets, so that ought to tell you something. But I won’t get into all that now - I’ll save my rant for the end of the post.

There was a bit of good news at the start of the show. Noelle’s knee healed enough for her to stay in the competition so good for her. Plus we got word from Nigel that Billy would be allowed into the Vegas Top 100 and Brandon allowed to audition again from the beginning for season seven, which is marvelous news. I didn’t think it fair that those two got penalized for Billy’s sudden illness and I’m glad SYTYCD is making that situation right.

The performances on Tuesday were in general… well… less than average. It’s ironic that while the quality of dancers that are on the show keeps going up it seems that the quality of the choreography this season is substantially less than last season. There were only two choreographers all night who really impressed me, which is saying a lot. Even Nappy Tabs, who I love immensely, seems to be missing a step. Maybe the loss of Mia Michaels is being felt harder than we the audience know? In any case, IMHO the routines as a whole were weak this week.

However, despite weak routines, the dancers really stepped it up. I really enjoyed Russell and Noelle’s Jamal Sims hip hop, although I did think those props really got in the way. Russell is a HUGE favorite of mine and I hope he makes it all the way to the end. The downside was the routine showed how weak Noelle is in other styles, and I immediately called her for the bottom four. Despite the fact that I REALLY want to punch Ashleigh in the face, I have to admit she was stunning with Jakob in their Viennese waltz. It was a gorgeous routine and she shined in it… as much as it pains me to say that. I personally loved Bianca and Victor in Tyce’s broadway number, although I definitely felt Victor was much flatter than Bianca. I was frankly astonished when the judges came down on them like hammers - I didn’t think it even close to as problematic as the judges thought it was. We had Bollywood again courtesy of Nakul Dev Mahajan and the team of Mollee and Nathan. However, this was the weakest Bollywood the show has seen yet - none of the power moves that have defined past routines were present here. My guess? Mollee couldn’t pull them off, but she got praised up and down by the judges. Bias much? Channing and Phillip bombed horribly in a Tony Meredith samba which was weak on every front imaginable. Really… there wasn’t much that was good here save for how gorgeous Channing looked. Karen and Kevin shined in a lack-luster Nappy Tabs number, making it look better than the routine was. This is a pair to watch - I think they’ll go far and I simply love Karen. The surprise of the night was the astonishingly good Stacey Tookey contemporary number danced by… wait for it… Kathryn and Legacy. Yes… I did say Legacy, and he erased all the doubt from my mind that he might not be able to handle this competition. He was amazing in this and I hope he’s with us for a long while. Pauline and Peter shined in their insane Wade Robson pop jazz routine. Such a strange routine but it worked amazingly well - I really loved this. The night ended with a smoldering and technically amazing Argentine tango by Ellenore and Ryan who set the room on fire with their work. Again, another couple to watch - they’ll go far.

I was really torn about who to give the Awesome Dance of the Week Award to this week as the last two numbers were both so amazing. If it was based purely on the dancing, Ellenore and Ryan would have it easily, but it’s not. It’s about the complete package, about the dance that packed the most punch and was most memorable and dynamic. With that in mind, I have to present the Award to Pauline and Peter for their amazing work in the Robson jazz piece. Dancing Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” couldn’t have been easy, but they knocked this one right out of the park. I’ve got my eye on these two - I think they’ll be around for a while yet.

Here is comes… the announcing of the bottom four. I had called Noelle, Victor, Channing and Phillip to be in the bottom four. Imagine my utter shock when, instead of Channing, the judge threw Bianca to the wolves and put her in the bottom four. BIANCA?!?! One weak routine and she’s in the bottom four??? Especially when Channing stunk up the joint as badly as she did? That made no sense to me at all. But, I figured Noelle was a lock for elimination so I wasn’t worried. I thought Phillip had been weak on both shows and that he was destined for elimination over Victor. I *LOVED* Bianca’s solo - it was imaginative and out-of-the-box, especially with her musical choice. Noelle did a Kayla impression and flailed around the stage - color me unimpressed. Both Victor and Phillip’s solos were amazing but I felt Phillip was the weaker dancer overall and would go.

Well, I was right about Phillip - he was the eliminated boy. What I was not prepared for in any way was the judges eliminating Bianca as well. Now, last season I thought the judges made an unpardonable mistake in the Top 18 eliminations by getting rid of Max. I still think that season would have been dramatically different had they allowed Max to stay. However, this Top 18 decision made the elimination of Max look like nothing. Bianca was a finalist. She is dynamic, personable, charming, incredibly talented and charismatic. She is everything that this show asks for and yet… she was eliminated. And to eliminate two tappers in one night? That’s just ridiculous. I’m far from alone in my outrage - all of Twitter was on fire with outrage over Bianca’s elimination for days - people are still angry over it. Hell, I know I am. This was the single worst elimination decision I’ve ever seen on this show and it makes NO sense at all.

Okay, okay… I’ll shut up now. All I can say is thank the gods we get to start voting next week as the judge have clearly lost their minds. So what did you guys think? You as pissed as I am about Bianca? Let me hear it!

By DonnaK

A week of surprises for #SYTYCD and some really bad news.

DonnaK: I’m so sorry this post is so late. I wrote most of it right after the show but needed to get some names. I saved it as closed… and then promptly forgot about it until just now. So sorry - polishing it up to reflect current changes and here it is…

This season of So You Think You Can Dance is going to be outstanding. The talent I saw throughout the auditions and in Vegas was just off the charts. I am disappointed at how many fantastic dancers they spent time featuring in Vegas only to cut them later. That time could have been better spent featuring a wider swath of people that would make it into the Top 20. There are a few dancers that were cut that surprised me, but my biggest surprises were saved for two dancers that made it into the Top 20 that I *SO* do not believe belong there.

Let’s start this off with Mollee Gray. Yes, she can dance. Yes, she’s incredibly advanced for her age. However, the judge were bang on right when they said she was simply too immature in her dancing to be in the Top 20. Watching her is like watching a 15 year old - she just doesn’t have the maturity to pull off most of the mature routines this show will throw at her. To put her in the Top 20 was a huge mistake IMHO.

WTF with Paula? Why on earth would she wait until she was on stage being told she was selected before she told the producers that she couldn’t be on the show? That move was either completely staged or Paula is truly inconsiderate. The moment she knew she was cast in a movie and could not appear on the show she should have taken herself out of the running to make room for a truly talented performer. She didn’t, and because of her actions that day, we are now stuck with Ashleigh Di Lello.

Let me make this one perfectly clear. I HATE ASHLEIGH. She is fake, plastic, annoying, clingy, jealous, abrasive, and not nearly talented enough to be in the Top 20. Yet here she is and I’m simply counting the days until I don’t have to look at her smug, arrogant, fake face anymore. Yes, she really does annoy me that damn much. I have this visceral hate reaction to her and her attitude - I just cannot stand her, and as long as she’s here I’m going to be growling at my screen in anger. *grrrrrr*

In Vegas I picked who I thought had this competition in the bag this season. Billy Bell showed himself at every turn to be far and away the best dancer this show has ever seen or had. The second they confirmed him for the Top 20 I knew he would go all the way. My heart just bout felt through the floor when I heard the news of his illness and his doctors pulling him out of the show. That is such a huge loss - I’m just hoping that the show will let him back in again next season since he technically never competed.

With Billy gone I had to rearrange my favorite picks for the boys and the girls. For the boys the first slot was easy - Russell, who I’m calling Final Four on right now. My second slot is hard - I’m torn between Jakob and Victor, but in the end I’m going to put my money on Jakob. The girls were similar - my first pick is Bianca, who I’m also calling Final Four on right now. My second favorite was again torn between two people - Karen and Ellenore, but in the end I’m going with Karen from what I’ve seen so far.

The performance show was a FANTASTIC idea - it was a tremendous way to get to know that contestants and really get a feel of how they stacked up against one another. It was this show in fact that helped me sort out my favorite for the season as the field really is so narrow and dynamic this year. I have to say I do NOT like the bigger stage - I miss the intimate setting of the old stage, especially the stairs and space in front for the dancers to utilize. Big mistake moving this to the bigger stage for the whole season - it should really be reserved for the last show.

The first elimination show was… bizarre, to say the least. To first lose Billy and then Noelle was a huge blow. Brandon, brought on to replace Billy at the literal last minute, didn’t stand a chance, and Russell was severely handicapped by having to work with two different partners in one week. I know MLB trumps SYTYCD and I see the need for the judges to make the first few eliminations, but I think they should be kept to the same rules we would be - they must nominate COUPLES, not individuals, and then choose between them. Furthermore, they should keep it to a bottom three and not two as they did that night - it’s more suspenseful and what would be occurring if baseball was not interfering with the schedule. I’ll say no more about the judging for now but I do want to wish Noelle a good a speedy recovery.

Most of the routines for the night were quite good and even in consistency and technique. Channing and Phillip did a marvelous jive, although I wish Phillip would take the tap smile off his face in other styles. Ellenore and Ryan shone in their Sonya jazz number, as did Karen and Kevin in their cha cha. My dislike of Ashleigh aside, she and Jakob did a respectable Broadway routine, although it’s easy to see that he’ll be carrying her for as long as she’s around. Mollee and Nathan’s disco was passable but lacked the fire I thought it needed, and I put that blame squarely on Mollee’s young shoulders. It was too much cuteness and not enough passion, and that’s not going to work for long.

The two standout routines of the night are my two picks for Awesome Dance of the Week. I have to say I’m really torn between the two and I’m having a huge time deciding to whom to give the award. My first nominee is Bianca and Victor’s amazing contemporary routine choreographed by Travis Wall. It was mature, captivating, elegant, and tremendously performed by both of them. It’s hard to believe Bianca’s a tap dancer when you see lines like that. My second nominee is Kathryn and Legacy’s Dave Scott helmed hip-hop number. The power and precision of that piece by both of Legacy and Kathryn was AMAZING. It may not have been the best choreography of the night, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. And it’s for that last reason - the fact that I was so taken in by the number - that I had to give the Awesome Dance of the Week Award to Kathryn and Legacy. I don’t expect Legacy to last long in this competition - he just doesn’t have the overall chops for it - but he’ll do well for a while.

Okay… time for some judge bitching. I guessed my bottom two and I was three for four on my pick. I naturally assumed that by picked Ariana that Peter would (rightly) be on the block as well. Choosing Russell was just… well… insane. Not only was he phenomenal under rotten circumstances he is easily one of the best on the show. Peter gave a far weaker performance and should have be up there, not Russell. I’m going to agree with the general populace and say the judges did it knowing they would be sending Brandon home and they wanted Russell to be able to show off his skills to anyone who had not been watching through Vegas week. It that was the ploy it worked - Russell seems to have only gained fans since that elimination show. Ariana was a good choice to go, although I would have MUCH preferred to see one of the two ladies that annoy me so much leave instead. How long are these judges going to coddle Ashleigh and Mollee? Only time will tell.

This season is definitely shaping up to be interesting, especially with the departure of my favorite choreographer in Mia Michaels. I think next week when things settle down a bit we’ll have a much better handle on how this season will play out. I’ll say one thing - with this talent, the only place to go is up.

I think what I love the most about the New Line trailers is how serious the trailers were, especially when they were working with franchises that had either long since ventured into camp and self-parody or even started out that way.

Rann: You know what a fridge moment is. It’s when you’ve watched a movie and later, some little bit of it that makes you go “Huh?” hits you. The idea is that it hits you when you’re at the fridge pondering leftovers or whatever just after the show, but in reality it can be a lot of things. A comment someone else makes, seeing something in another movie, whatever. It can hit as you’re leaving the theater, or even as you’re seeing the movie again years later.

What I wanted to do for Halloween was compile a list of things about various movies that are actually only scary when you think about them too much… that, or they get a lot scarier.

1. Jack Skellington Knows Where You Live
</center

In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack knows all of the houses he needs to go to and leave presents at. He knows which kids need a dolly and which ones need a batskin cap. He never takes any sort of list from Santa, and he’s working on gifts long before he’d have the chance to anyway. He knows how many to make, and he knows just where to go.

That means a towering, mostly-insane animated skeleton that believes fear, dread, and terror are the highest expressions of affection knows just where you live. He knows where your children live. And just like good ol’ Sandy Claws, he sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake.

2. Freddy Krueger Is A Demigod

Oh sure, Freddy’s a freakishly powerful vengeful spirit, as we all know from the lore, even leaving aside the movie where he’s actually a meme of primal horror or something.

But take a minute and think about the things he’s done. He’s rewritten reality on a whim, on nothing more than the necessity of the one around whom he’s rewriting it being asleep. He’s fashioned the dream world into his own sick little universe over which he reigns supreme, which means that either there was no one powerful (or evil) enough to do so before he came along, or he kicked whatever demonic motherfucker had it before out and took it for his own. All it takes is a little belief in him, and not just the dream world but the real world is his plaything.

Belief strengthening his powers only adds to the idea that Freddy is actually a deity of some sort, and sleep is communing with him… even if you’re praying to some other god to get you the fuck away from him. And if he’s really as deific as all that… what if he decided he didn’t like his own limitations and just made them go away?

3. Charlie Brown Has A Conspiracy Against Him

Okay, maybe not so much “scary” as “sad and depressing”, but it’s Halloween-related. Charlie Brown gets a rock. He always gets a rock. Let’s leave aside the fact that he’s in a neighborhood full of sick bastards that apparently collect rocks before Halloween to give to some kids while others get candy. The fact that poor Chuck always gets the rock, every time, means that basically this neighborhood would have to be conspiring against him.

All of them would have to make sure that they have at least one rock to give out. All of them. Then, just to make sure that none of them slipped up and gave a rock to some other kid in a bedsheet with holes cut in it, they’d have to call around to all their neighbors and say “Yeah, that little Charlie Brown fuck’s the one in the sheet with all the different holes in it. Make sure to give the little bastard some rock candy, haw haw!”

If you want to take it to its saddest, most depressing extreme, figure that to make absolutely sure no one slips up and drops a piece of candy in there, his parents call ahead and warn people what costume he’s wearing.

4. Clover Has Really Tough Skin

Seems like no big deal, right? After all, what kaiju doesn’t have skin that can easily shrug off rocket-propelled grenades and even missiles?

But Cloverfield is supposed to be the “realistic” giant monster movie. Sure, all the info is in strange, scattered places, but it’s all supposed to make sense. And as any whaler can tell you, an oceangoing creature doesn’t necessarily have armor plating just because it’s big and dives deep. But Clover survives all kinds of shooting, explosions, and quite possibly lives through the biggest ordinance that the armed forces are willing to use on US soil. So it’s obviously evolved to stand up to a lot of punishment. But things don’t evolve defenses like that for no reason at all.

Which means that it’s entirely possible there’s something out there that is intended to be a predator to Clover’s species. Yeah, that’s right… something that hunts, kills, and eats those things.

5. ALL The Damn Ghosts Got Out

Towards the end of the first movie, the Ecto-Containment Unit is shut off by Agent Dickless of the EPA. The gigantic column of energy blasting into the sky is the bajillion ghosts that the guys have caught up to that point being released all at once. They then begin wreaking havoc on New York.

But it seems the Ghostbusters were themselves busted and put out of business not too long after. Wouldn’t most of these ghosts still be running around? Hell, Slimer at the very least seems to not only be free, but to now be free to roam where he wishes, no longer confined to the area of his previous haunting. And did that column disperse the ghosts? Is the world now infested with completely free-roaming ghosts?

Obviously there’s plenty of ghosts still around by the second movie, as it never really addresses the matter of what happened to the first batch… for that matter, what about all the ooze? Was one night of singing and brotherhood by New York enough to dry it up and turn it positive? Or are they going to have new ghosts exploding out of nowhere the next time there’s a traffic jam?

6. Holy Shit Zombies

In real life.

Remember back in 2007, in Peru? That “meteor” hit, and people started having strange symptoms? Only then it wasn’t a meteor but some sort of explosion? And then it wasn’t an explosion but something else but don’t pester us about it stupid reporters?

Yeah. So right about now would be when the zombies have wandered around through the Peruvian jungles, finding various curious American explorers to chomp on, plaguing ancient tribes, and of course being ferried to a variety of research facilities around the world, just waiting for someone to do something stupid and unleash them upon the city populace.

Just in time for Halloween, when people people would be complimenting the zombies on their great costumes right up until teeth sank into flesh.
