Dude. I’m still so bummed about that Japanese place. That ginger shrimp looked AWESOME. And to think I almost wasn’t going to ask about if the dishes had alcohol in them! I really think restaurants absolutely need to start labeling dishes that contain things like alcohol or nuts so that people can make intelligent choices. I could have wound up in the ER last night. Thank the gods for small favors.
TGI Friday’s was teh awesome. I do so love that place.
That sucks about the Japanese place, sounds like it would have been pretty good. I’ll admit to never having heard of an alcohol allergy before, finding that out had to be a rather nasty surprise.
Would you believe I’ve never been to TGI Friday’s?
So how was/will be your week in food?
Mine was awesome. I heard through the grapevine that this new mexican restaurant by my place has a thurs night special and… it’s amazing. Dollar tacos, 75 cent flautas, 50 cent baskets of chips and queso, 50 cent poppers, dollar drafts, and 1.25 well liqour. Oh, and it’s late night so they play whatever music they wants. Primus, Radiohead, Violent Femmes, Bad Religion, etc… So fucking awesome. Felt like opening presents on Xmas morning. The best part? The owner asked me if I’d bring more people back next week, then comped all of our food and drinks down to $5 each. That’s how you build word of mouth.
Unfortunatly, I kinda blew my diet there so now I’m making up for it for the rest of the weekend. Grilled chicken and lettuce, oh my. Totally worth it though.
I need to do some serious grocery shopping this weekend. I am thinking of cooking some cornish game hens. We also might take the really cheap way out and go to P.F. Chang’s. I still have $138.00 to burn by the end of the year so I can get re-loaded for the new year. I so LOVE working for the home office. Free food all year is such a perk
And great when I forget lunch, or don’t want to cook. Pei Wei or Chang’s…the lazy woman’s dinner!!
Oh, do I know the alcohol-wary situation… Alcoholism runs in both sides of my family, so I don’t touch the stuff, and my recent ex has a MASSIVE allergy to it. We always had to ask wherever we went.
My weekend in food thus far has included some awesome Chicken Cordon Bleu I made Friday and I grilled up some steaks and fish for a family get-together Saturday. I tried out a new recipe for the fish, which turned out amazingly if I do say so myself… And I’m thinking of trying out that grilled pizza recipe you rave about for monday night.
I am liking the looks of those cupcakes. Must resist chocolate…... I do not understand the alcohol in food. there are substitutes that give similar flavor. This weekend is going to be a simple one. Baked potato and homemade sausage (Thanks to my brother the hog farmer) with a bit of corn on the cob from the garden. Doing it all on the grill to keep the house cool today.
Happy Birthday Jim! This week in food will be interesting for us… we’re taking our first trip to Paris…
Damm that sucks.
I usually Cook brats in a aluminum pan with ah very heavy lager beer. Love them that way,
I tookmy two boys for a culanary experience of a lifetime yesterday. Before coming home from St. Louis, we had breakfast at a Wafflehouse! That will be the biggest excitement in food this weekend.
Last time I went to waffle house I had ashes from the cooks cigar in my eggs. Not in a big rush to go back there again
We actaully sat right where we could see the cook, who happened to be a hot looking woman who couldn’t have been a day over 21. In fact, every employee there was a woman under 30.

JimK: As you may have noticed, yesterday was my birthday. I am 25 years old, for the thirteenth time. There’s still time to buy me something off my wishlist, you know.
In celebration of my birth, DonnaK and I were going to go to a fairly new Japanese restaurant near our house. No, actually we did go to a fairly new Japanese restaurant near our house. Went in, got seated, checked out the menu. Nice place. Nice slightly-westernized Japanese decor, cool industrial metal menus, looked like good food. Except that every single sauced item contains sake (which was 90% of the non-sushi menu), and they spritz sake over every single meat and seafood item on the menu before cooking and/or serving. Except the sashimi. That they don’t spritz.
DonnaK is allergic - severely so - to alcohol. Her only choices were some of the sushi dishes or sashimi, which she doesn’t like. So we left and went to the first place we saw down the road; TGI Friday’s.
Now, I know there’s a popular myth that says alcohol burns off when cooked. IT DOES NOT. Let me repeat that: ALCOHOL DOES NOT BURN OFF WHEN COOKED. This is how it works according to science (US Department of Agriculture Research):
Preparation method: Poured into boiling or simmering liquid, served almost immediately
Alcohol remaining: 85%
Preparation method: Light it on fire
Alcohol remaining: 75%
Preparation method: Mixed in and baked or simmered
Alcohol remaining after elapsed cooking time:
5 minutes: 40%
30 minutes: 35%
1 hour: 25%
1-1/2 hours: 20%
2 hours: 10%
2-1/2 hours: 5%
Even if you simmered that vodka sauce for 2.5 hours, 5% of the booze remains. Seems like so little, right? Wanna serve that to your severely allergic wife? How about your 4-years-sober husband, or your 30-days-sober best friend? Worse would be the common myth that you can flambee’ booze out of something and leave the flavor behind. The lesson here is never assume that alcohol cooks out, and if you have issues, such as allergies or alcoholism, always ask your server if there is alcohol used in the preparation of whatever you order. Especially at a Japanese place.
After eating at Fridays, btw, I destroyed three slices of New York Style cheesecake. Tonight I’m having a normal dinner, but after I am eating some birthday cupcakes I was forced to order online because no bakery around here does anything other than regular old boring bake-sale cupcakes. We got them from BangerangBakeShop.com. DonnaK got the PMS CUPCAKE AKA CHOCOLATE OVERLOAD and the CHOCOLATE COMPETITION and I got the ALL THAT JAZZBERRY STRAWBERRY and the BARE NAKED LEMON LIME CUPCAKE. I’ll let you know how they were.
So how was/will be your week in food?
