Yeah like I said, if Fox had any intention of keeping shows running and getting them to be watched, they would be sticking them on after American Idol. They did that for neither Terminator or Dollhouse. You have the highest rated program on TV and you don’t try to exploit that to get people to watch your shows on other nights by making people interested?
Unless networks (and FOX especially) steps right up and says “hell no, it’s not cancelled, it’ll be back, we already signed the contracts” it’s likely gone. Any time they string you along as they are there, they already know it’s not getting another chance.. they’re just likely avoiding scaring away any advertising or such. I mean, why buy ad time for a show you know is killed that will likely mean even lower ratings?
Not to mention they might wiggle out more cash or go against some clause in the initial contracts if they say something too soon.
The problem is that the Network Television business model isn’t quite dead yet, but it’s definitely dying. These shows need to either go straight to DVD / BluRay / iTunes, or cable, or whatever. Joss Wheden for whatever reason keeps doing deals with the devil and is for some reason surprised when he winds up in cancellation hell. I like Firefly, but I can see why it had difficulty picking up a following. The individual stories were decent but not “woo-hoo great,” and the overall arc (which was “woo-hoo great”) took way to freaking long to develop and by the time it got there the show was already toast. That’s 100% on Joss - he should have known better.
I haven’t watched Dollhouse, but from what I’ve heard I probably wouldn’t have liked it anyway. I just don’t have the patience to nurse a piece of shit along in the hopes it will turn into gold. No big deal, nobody bats 1.000 and everyone’s going to do something shitty now and then. This one’s a piece of shit so let’s just bury it and move on.

JimK: Ausiello says T:TSCC is all gone go bye-bye:
I totally believe this.
Since Fox only seems to give a crap about Nielsens, and the ratings for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles were in the crapper worse than ever...it’s done. Congrats, Fox, you fucking did it again. You killed another great show. Your combined efforts of placing it on Friday nights and ignoring DVR and iTunes/streaming views have successfully destroyed yet another really great show that had nothing but potential to get better based on the season (now likely series) finale.
I told Donna that I predicted that Dollhouse would win an internal network Battle of the Doomed Shows…unless of course Fox cancels that as well, which is what I actually expect to happen. Barring that, Dollhouse will survive for another half-season. And it will find it’s voice, get consistently good and then Fox will cancel it.
Because that’s what they do. It’s all they do.
