Depp would be good as the Mad Hatter, but honestly, how could you fit that guy into the Nolan universe? He’s just too damned campy to really work. The Riddler and the Penguin I could see, but a guy obsessed with hats? Maybe if they did some serious alterations to the character, but I just don’t see it working.

Depp’s one of those guys that can never truly disappear into a role - you can always see just a little bit of him peeking around the edges. Hoffman has the ability to just vanish, Depp really doesn’t. In the Nolan-verse… you need to be able to vanish. So I’m still very, VERY iffy on Depp. And I’m also a big huge NO on Cher or Jolie as Catwoman for the same reasons, though I have some faith that Jolie could pull it off.

JimK: MTV is running this as confirmation:
I do NOT read that as confirmation that Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman are signed and this is a done deal. I read that as an executive saying how they could potentially top Heath Ledger’s Joker performance, or at least equal it.
That’s just my two cents. I wouldn’t get too excited yet. On the other hand…yeah, that would be freaking awesome.
