From the sounds of all of them, I could probably be fine with seeing none of them. No new shows are really on my radar right now, and I get the feeling its going to be one of those years where all the new series don’t cut it. I wonder if the writer’s strike had a little bit to do with that feeling.
Right now I’m just waiting for the new seasons of Chuck, Heroes, Sarah Connor, Big Bang Theory and maybe 24. I just hope they aren’t all on the same night.
Is it just me, or do any of these sound like it could stand in perfectly well during one of those “pitching a tired old concept with a zany twist to the execs” scenes from The Simpsons?
“So what’ve you got for me?”
“See, it’s a romantic comedy show about this psychiatrist who’s got a patient who thinks he’s Cupid, god of love, right? Only she starts to think he might BE cupid… with sexy results!”
“Ah-huh. Got something else?”
“Oh, well, see… there’s this crime novelist, right? And then this murderer starts copycatting the murders in his novels!”
“Like in all those movies.”
“EXACTLY like all those movies! So the police department teams him up with a female detective… with sexy results!”
Castle, to me, especially stinks of same-old-same-old, with the guy surrounded by a group of closer-to-earth women constantly rolling their eyes at him and remarking on the overall superiority of anything with a uterus, with him occasionally stumbling across something for which he’ll be given two seconds of credit before his “long-suffering” ex-wife comments that he still can’t do his own laundry. I loves me some Nathan Fillion, too, but frankly that sounds so cliche and overdone that I’d feel bad seeing him subjected to it, unless it has a level and style of writing that completely averts the “Not this shit again” feeling that blurb is giving me.
I remember watching cupid and liking it, thought iot was very funny and pissed when it got canceled. It was Pivin’s character, this will suck unless they brinbg everyone back cuz I still remember! Why don’t they pick up something that got canceled before it’s time and give it a new life like Firefly, Wonder Falls, Joan or Arcadia? Got to keep reinventing the wheel or blatant rip offs all the time?
This is why I watch USA and SciFi.
Three shows premiered at the same time: “Cupid”, the new “Fantasy Island” with Malcom Mcdowel as Mr. Rourke, and “C16”, a great FBI drama with Eric Roberts, DB Sweeney, and the lovely Angie Harmon, pre-Law and Order. All were killed within weeks, as they were on the night-of-death, Saturday. I loved all them, and if I remember correctly, “C16” was the first show I saw on network TV in Wide screen.
I’ll try all of these new shows, except the sitcom, because of all of the new shows, thats the one that seems to me to be the least interesting. Plus, Sarah Paulson was great on “Studio 60”, and deserves a good vehicle for her talents.

NYC, LA, Vegas ... and ... uhh… I want to say Chicago but can’t think of a current show that takes place there.
It sounds like quirky is in this year. That could be a good thing if they weren’t all trying to be the next Monk or House. This is why I mostly watch cable.

JimK: ABC picked up five new shows yesterday. Let’s take a look at the press release, shall we?
Nice. Well, not entirely, I mean more procedurals? Ugh. But Nathan Fillion in a dramedy on network TV? OK. I will watch that, sirs and madams. Based on nothing more than my
deep, unwaverng mancrushsupport for Fillion’s talent and style. This is a “remake” of what was a Jeremy Pivens vehicle back in the day, and I remember liking it. It got canceled pretty fast. The premise allows for whatever kind of story a writer feels like telling. A remake could go horribly wrong, or it could go amazingly right.
I don’t see it. Not sure what I am supposed to like about this or why I should watch it. And Jesus Mexican Jumping Bean Christ, another procedural set in New York City? Really? Are there really only five cities in this country?
I smell Arrested Development stink all over this monkey and it’s not coming from Portia de Rossi. Again, could go well, could easily go horribly awry. This will live or die by the writing...which means it will probably start out intelligent and get dumbed down over the course of two to three years until it gets canceled.
Nope. Sorry. You lost me, ABC. This sounds suspiciously like a three-camera sitcom with a “1, 2, 3, punchline, laughtrack” rhythm and I am sick to death of it. I’d rather see fifty more single-camera dry “wit-coms” than one more According to Jim. Sitcoms need to be perfect to work these days, and I’m not feeling it. Milano is lovely to look at but I’m just not feelin’ it.
So...how do you feel about ABC’s new shows?
