Terminating the Dollhouse
Seriously they are morons. That’s exactly what they did with Firefly. Whedon and Minear should demand a guarantee of one full season for their show and all episodes air in their proper order. And whenever a network executive balks just bring up Firefly and the dedication of his fanbase, and how they screwed the pooch with that. Fox is full of stupid people.
Those asinine morons who canceled us were themselves fired for incompetence.
Immediately came to mind.
I swear Fox is run by some of the biggest morons anymore. The network that likely would’ve died an early death had they not taken a chance and allowed X-Files and Simpsons to build a fan base.. can’t allow anything to live for more then a few episodes if it doesn’t immediately get huge ratings. Or be full of inane T&A;crap that noone with a brain gives 2 shits about (*cough*the OC*cough*)
I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised that there’s someone high-up that just hates Whedon or something and sabotages his stuff. There’s really no logical reason that they didn’t bring back Firefly after the response from fans, and especially after the DVD proved it was a money maker.
Why in the name of Zeus’s sphincter does Whedon keep going back to Fox? Is he a masochist? Will nobody else give him the time of day? Does he really enjoy watching his products get ass-raped with a giant Fox dong sans lubrication?
Everyone is going off at what a bunch of Fucktards are running Fox (true enough), but what the fuck about Whedon going back to them again and again and again…??!??
Damnit, now I’m itching to watch Firefly… where’d those DVD’s go to…

This really is true, I myself have bought the box set 4 times. Two for myself (lost one in the move and bought a replacement), one for my sister, and one for my GF because she kept stealing mine.

I’ve bought it 3 times and been given it as a gift twice. Why? Because I can never get them back from people I lend them to.
Yknow what though? I don’t mind. For $35, As long as it’s appreciated, I’d be happy to give away a set or two to friends every year.

I suppose there’s something to be said for the fact that, in being aborted so early, the series left us in its heyday before the suck started to develop.
Because, let’s face it, Whedon properties tend to have the suck creep in more steadily the longer they go on. If it had run as long as Buffy, people wouldn’t complain about it being killed, they’d be wanting to put a pillow over its face.
(Angel held up better, though that may just be my own fannishness talking, and the fact that, again, it was abruptly forced into its endrun. It may also be that David Boreanaz was easier to write a show around than SMG, but again, my fannishness.)
Whedon is very, very good, especially in the sprint, but he has a little trouble going the distance on a marathon. You do have to admit that one of the reasons that Firefly is as well-loved as it is that it essentially died before giving anyone (well, except some utterly psycho people) anything to truly complain about.
If we were to assume that the episodes that did make it would have been indicative of the general pace and style of the show that would have continued as it went on, it would have been moving at such breakneck speed and ups and downs of characterization that it probably would have burned itself out in three seasons, four at most.
This isn’t ragging on Firefly at all… I love it a lot myself, I’m just looking at the hard reality of it a bit. If it hadn’t been messed around with and canceled, it probably would have become “a good show” rather than what a lot of people seem to think it would have been, “the greatest show ever to be created in the history of creating things”. It’s just sort of that thing of not appreciating an artist or writer until they’re gone.

JimK: Joss Whedon recently wrote a (somewhat creative) letter-faux-interview thing for Whedonesque, explaining that he’s had to make a second first episode of Dollhouse.
Go. Read it. I’ll be here.
Done? ‘Kay. Feeling the same level of trepidation I am? I don’t like one damn thing I read there. The network - the new Fox, allegedly not like the old Fox - has basically forced him to re-shoot a new pilot because they don’t get or don’t like what he made. That’s what is really not being said here. Joss is playing fall guy for the network and trying to not look like he’s sending the fans after them. He had an episode, shot, done, ready to move on to the next one sir. They wanted something else. He mockingly tries to cut off comparisons to Firefly (the pilot episode was aired later in the season even though it was, you know, the one where you meet everyone and know what the hell is gong on.) but that;s all this feels like. Fox, doing that thing they do. Again. New staff be damned.
Maybe he’s telling the truth and each of the first seven episodes could serve as a pilot, but that doesn’t make me feel any better. It sounds to me like a lot of re-treading of the same plot points and exposition in order to catch new viewers up. It sounds like it would be virtually impossible to show any growth or progression if you could just shuffle the episodes willy-nilly.
All that being said, I’m so watching as many of episodes of Dollhouse as the network airs before they cancel it. No choice. I couldn’t stop myself even if I wanted to. More than most other TV writers, I trust Joss to get it right, or at least entertain my ass even if it goes wrong.
