I know little to nothing about the world in which the original Star Treks exist, so was basically a blank slate going in.
I fucking loved the shit out of this movie. So hard.

Rann: Minor spoilers.
First, as someone said when I brought the subject up to them, “I guess you can only have so many rebels without a cause”. Kirk is now given a reason for his defiance of authority and tendency towards cowboy diplomacy in the form of a dead father and an asshole stepfather, rather than it just being because he’s… well, because he’s Kirk. It’s left to the reader to decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
Second, I guess that whole “Vulcans aren’t very much on the physical contact thing” is now out the window. I know comparisons have been made to this being “Trek 90210”, and they’re all supposed to be hot young studs and babes now, but Spock’s supposed to be in his thirties or something, and Uhura’s in her mid-twenties, and yet they both display an inability to keep their hands off each other or wait for the long smooches and caresses to be conducted in private that’s more indicative of a pair of teenagers that have just discovered what fun making out is. One scene has Uhura initiating all this and Spock desperately trying to keep his Vulcan cool throughout it, and that’s probably just how a scene like that should be. Too bad he tosses it out the window a bit later to pretty much grab her ass and lipwrestle in front of the whole transporter room staff.
Third, Harold and Kirk are going to fucking White Castle, bitch, and there’s not a thing your goddamn Romulans can do to stop them.
Fourth, that is not nearly the last of the Harold and Kumar jokes, I intend to run that one into the ground like any joke ever to appear on Family Guy.
Fifth, this movie rocked my socks. I’m going to bitch about it when I do the review, because I can’t seem to stop myself from doing that no matter how I try, but it is really really good and I hope they do more with this alternate timeline.
JimK: UPDATE by JimK
There may be a simple explanation for why everyone loves the new Trek:
That explains a lot.
