AlphaDog wrote: The phone exchange between Shane and Vic should get Goggins some kind of an award, for that was some downright awesome acting. The true nature of Vic reared its ugly head as he absorbed the arrow from Shane about his bitchy wife turning on him, and in a mere few seconds, moved on to turning the knife in Shane's psyche even more by telling him about taking his kids out for ice cream.
I am disappointed that Ronnie got hosed in all this, but in the end, it had to be. That was the final piece into how Vic just doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself.
But all in all, an awesome final show. Glad something was learned from the Sopranos backlash.

I have told my sons versions of the 3 rules often as they really do apply. Expect anything, be nice, and if no other choice exists, beat the living snot out of them. I also throw out the 'I thought you would be bigger' line often, to see who gets it or not. Let's hope he jazz-hands the crap out of it.

Your review is spot on. But what is worse, that the characters that the 3 freaks latch onto, if the end is any indication, had some sort of feelings bordering on affection for them. I mean what the hell? I'm pretty sure in the real world all 3 would be in prison forever.
And that isn't including the episode where those three get stuck in the storage closet. Ugh.

Joe R. wrote: I have no frame of reference to other examples of the style, so maybe this is the worst Dunkelweizen ever made. All I know is that it is wheat-y, sweet, bold, very little hops bitter and it drinks smooth and finishes clean as hell. There’s a vaguely fruit-ish aroma to it, some say it’s “hints of bananna and clove” but I’m not tasting that at all. It’s generically fruit-ish with something else behind it that may be called spice.
I've never had that one, but yes it sounds like you've happened upon a less flavorful example of the style. The ester flavors (the banana and clove) should be pretty forward. That said, you might prefer a more muted flavor. The aforementioned Aventinus and Erdinger are two German examples. Should be easy to get in CT. Some DW's are made domestically, but usually in limited runs and not bottled. Victory makes one, but only at certain times of the year.
Another similar thing to consider would be a Weizenbock, basically a stronger Dunkel Weizen.

All of those should be available in CT at any half-decent specialty beer store, with the exception of the Rogue and especially the Alaskan.
You also might want to think about Belgian or Belgian-style beers. Some smoother darker ones include:
Maredsous 8
Maudite (from Canada, but available and in-style)

West Virginia Rebel wrote: My own take on Vic is that he has always been a wannabe. He wanted to be seen as something that he wasn't, so like all good poseurs he put on an act until it took on a life of its own and he began to believe his own BS.
And, despite his admittedly at times brilliant Machivellian manipulations, the fact that he was a wannabe came back to bite him. I think Vic's own particular brand of psychosis was based as much on the need to be part of something as it was the need to control it. He wanted acceptance, but he was never willing to accept in return. He might have seen the Barn and his world as a cheesboard and him controlling the game, but in the end he became a pawn of his own demons (how's that for torturing metaphors?)
So...was Vic truly evil and irredeemable? Part of the genius of the show was that it let you have moments where you might think there was some hope for salvation for Vic, but in the end, you knew he had to go down some way, and becoming a nameless cubicle worker is as close to Hell for someone like Vic that he was likely to get without going to prison.
And Shane...he simply got boxed into a corner...quite frankly I wasn't too surprised by that; I suppose he figured he had one last shot at exposing Vic and saving his own soul, and he took it in the only way he thought he could.
Ronnie-why, why did you trust Vic for so long? Was it just loyalty, a good man trying to be a good partner?
Claudette at least got to see Vic exposed, and Dutch caught his killer kid-the kid was right; Dutch is also the kind of guy who comes to LA to get noticed in his own way. Billings got away with his insurance scam. Aceveda will probably ride his inevitable Mayorship to the Governor's office and perhaps beyond.
And Vic walks out of his little cubicle as the lights go out, gun in hand, going...where? Where does he go from here without losing his immunity deal?
So is Vic really beaten? Like everyone else, I feel kind of sorry for him. But if he hasn't learned his lesson yet, chances are he won't in the future.
And yeah, getting there was one hell of a ride.

I took this a bit further, that life specifically in L.A. never stops that new characters are introduced even at the close of a story and that the story may stop being told but never ends. This point was really bookend for me by the fact that the show opened and closed with two quintessential L.A. bands X and concrete blond.
Ronnie was a good man doing bad things
I think it was more he was a good man that allowed the ends to justify the means in the beginning, and then lost perspective along the way and in the end was a cautionary tale that "In the end we all go home alone"
Shane killed his family out of love and drug-addled desperation
Have to admit that bugged me a bit, that was the fastest forming coke habit ever know, or did he have a previous addiction that I am forgetting about? but I also have to admit I had to pause the tv for a minute to really let that all sink in that was one of the most powerful seconds of TV ever.
And we the viewers - like all victims of conscious-less sociopaths - we defended him, supported him and even rooted for him.
wow you really put some thought into that. I may steal that line for future use. However, I am not so sure it is as simple as him starting over. The moment he looks at the barrel of his gun you know he had the thought to kill himself that he was now a neutered dog, kept inside and not allowed to roam the streets any more, and yes I did feel sorry for him when he gazed out to the street as the police cars zoomed by.
The worse thing for him was not death; it was to live the life where he wasn't the star or center of attention, but just a minor supporting role, someone who has the lowly job of reading reports and giving advice based on his former life.
Will he some how turn it all around and get to be in the thick of it again, he thinks so at least. He is looking at the next 3 years as a prison sentence, and who knows what will happen after that.
Can’t wait to gather up all the DVDs and start you again from the beginning.
I too am waiting on the super-delux full series box set.

In Japan, books are read back to front, not front to back. So how does ten-year old Hiro read his Japanese comic book? You guessed it… front to back.
I have a question concerning this. Its how Japanese comics are done right? The thing is that 9th Wonders is an American Comic book. So even if it is in Japanese Isaac would have drawn it as american, and its not really easy to switch around the comic panels to do that. So are American comics that are translated to Japanese having their panels switched around as well?

mgnmfrc1 wrote: Definition:
Dunkelweizen is the dark version of the regular golden-yellow Weissbier or Weizenbier (more commonly called Hefeweizen in North America), the spritzy, creamy Bavarian wheat beer with pronounced clove, vanilla, banana, apple, bubblegum, and sometimes nutmeg flavors. Dunkel means dark in German (as opposed to weiss, which means white) and Weizen means wheat. Like a Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen is made from a mixed mash of wheat and barley malts, but unlike a Weissbier, it also contains a large array of lightly to thoroughly caramelized or roasted malts that give it both its color and its complexity. A Dunkelweizen, therefore, has all the characteristic and differentiated flavors of a sophisticated wheat ale, overlaid with chocolatey to roasted flavors. Dunkelweizen is a very complex beer style with endless variations on the same theme. There are dozens of brands of Dunkelweizen in Bavaria, each with its own, very individual, flavor orientation, and several brands, inlcuding Schneider Aventinus and Erdinger (depicted) are exported to the United States. For more on German wheat beer brewing, see Weissbier.
Well Ok then, a dark Hefe, that makes sense. Sounds like I need to try it.

That's pretty much standard hollywood though. Plenty of times you have people getting beat up and the injuries don't show or go away quickly. And most of the time you notice people punching never get a sore hands. Hell you punch someone in the face and in reality you have a good chance of breaking bones in your hand. But that rarely happens on TV.

1. Powers were beginning to manifest in certain individuals before the eclipse. I'd write it so that everyone had *some* weird shit happen, but no full manifestations *until* the eclipse.
2. The pseudoscience: When the sun is there doing its job, the overwhelming amount of energy it puts off in certain frequencies obliterates *other*, special frequencies. During an eclipse, these specific kinds of solar radiation leak through, and in some individuals with certain genetic markers (natural or created) the radiation triggers a final transformation into full-blown superheroville.
3. The reason it's blocking powers now? Easy. If a "hero" is exposed to the kind of radiation that triggered the change, it floods the cells with something that blocks access to the power.
Now, I know that sounds all Trek-nobabbly, but WHO GIVES A FUCK?!?! At least it has some faint possibility of being accepted *and* it fits both the past and the present without retconning too much.
Tim Kring? Fucking call me, I'll write your shit for you, you weak bitch.
